Prepare for the Optometry Admission Test with these resources
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the OAT? The Optometry Admission Test (OAT) is a standardized exam that measures general academic ability and understanding of scientific concepts. It is administered by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) and is required for admission to all optometry schools and colleges in the United States.
What subjects does the OAT cover? The OAT consists of four sections: Survey of the Natural Sciences (Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry), Reading Comprehension, Physics, and Quantitative Reasoning.
When should I take the OAT? You should plan to take the OAT after completing most of your prerequisite science courses—typically after your sophomore or junior year. Ideally, you’ll take the OAT about a year before you plan to apply to optometry school, giving you time to focus on applications and interviews.
When is the OAT administered? The OAT is a computerized exam offered year-round at Prometric testing centers, giving students flexibility to choose a date and location that best fits their schedule. Since seats can fill quickly, it is recommended to register at least one to two months in advance to secure your preferred test date and allow ample time for preparation.
